Porta Potty Rental Tips for Jobsites & Events
OSHA imposes specific requirements for portable toilets at construction sites and large events. To best serve your needs on the job, we’ll ask how many employees you have and their typical number of shifts each day. For events, be ready to provide how many attendees you expect to have and how long the event will last.
How Many Construction Porta Potties You Need
The number of portable restrooms you need for construction sites mostly depends on the number of employees you have working at a given project. Providing a site plan is a great way to make sure your portable sanitation services are both conveniently placed, yet as out of the way as possible.
We also understand OSHA requirements and can assist you in getting the jobsite porta potties and accessories you need to achieve workplace compliance.
Quick Tips:
- One restroom can accommodate 10 workers during a 40-hour work week.
- A minimum of one hand wash station should be added per four restrooms.
Number of Workers | 1 Shift* | 2 Shifts* | 3 Shifts* |
---|---|---|---|
10 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
20 | 2 | 4 | 6 |
30 | 3 | 6 | 9 |
40 | 4 | 8 | 12 |
50 | 5 | 10 | 15 |
60 | 6 | 12 | 18 |
70 | 7 | 14 | 21 |
80 | 8 | 16 | 32 |
Suggested Numbers of Porta Potties for Events
We’ll conveniently place both standard and ADA portable toilets to appropriately accommodate attendees. Use the table for an estimate of how many portable sanitation services you’ll need, based on how long your event will take place and the expected number of guests. Keep in mind, additional services may be required if food and drink are being provided or sold.
Quick Tips:
- Add 15-20% more units if food and drinks are served at the event.
- A minimum of one hand wash station should be added per four restrooms.

What is the OSHA standard for portable toilets?
The OSHA standard for portable toilets includes availability based on placement, timeliness of accessibility and cleanliness. OSHA makes it clear that porta potties must be serviceable at time of use to meet the requirements of one portable toilet per 20 employees or fewer on a construction site.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?

What is biocide?
Biocides are any chemical substance used to eliminate or protect against unwanted plants, animals and/or microorganisms. Portable restrooms regularly use blue-colored biocides made of powerful disinfectants and deoderizers, such as chlorine and bromine, to neutralize harmful bacteria.
There are four groups of biocides:

- Preservatives
- Pest control agents
- General biocidal products
