Understanding the Main Types of Dumpsters

You need to get rid of waste, so you just rent a dumpster, right? But dumpsters come in all different shapes and sizes, and each type has a specific waste removal purpose. The two main dumpster types are roll off dumpsters and front load dumpsters. Learn the difference between the two — and when to use each one — in our comprehensive guide.

What is a Roll Off Dumpster?

Roll off dumpsters are large, open-topped containers used for one-time jobs like construction projects or home cleanouts that generate high volumes of debris. They are designed to "roll off" the back of specialized trucks to make it easy to cart bulky or large amounts of waste to the landfill.

Roll off dumpsters come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 10 to 40 cubic yards, and have typical weight limits between 2,000 and 12,000 pounds, or 1 to 6 tons. The maximum weight limit is 20,000 pounds, or 10 tons. Renting a roll off dumpster is also known as temporary dumpster service, with a typical rental period of seven to 10 days.

Roll off dumpsters are most often used for specific, temporary projects. However, they can be used as an ongoing waste solution for industrial and manufacturing facilities that generate large amounts of debris.

What is a Front Load Dumpster?

Front load dumpsters are smaller, lidded bins used for regular trash service at businesses — you'll see these dumpsters behind any restaurant or store. They’re picked up and emptied by the hydraulic arms of front load trucks.

Front load dumpster services are also called permanent dumpster services because the dumpster always stays at the business or restaurant that uses it. Front load dumpsters are usually emptied on a schedule that fits the business's needs. Restaurants and coffee shops might have their dumpster emptied every day, while office buildings might choose a weekly or monthly schedule. These dumpsters range in size from 2 to 8 cubic yards with weight limits between 400 and 1,600 pounds.
